5 DIY hair masks to keep your tresses happy and lustrous in the monsoon

Do you know the secret to a woman’s long, healthy, lustrous hair? Ask them, and a majority will say that they follow a weekly hair care routine that includes a super-easy hair mask made from ingredients easily available in their kitchen. Yes, it’s that simple and hassle-free.

Especially during monsoons, when humidity soars high, it often becomes a daunting task to manage your tresses that go berserk with all kinds of issues, including frizz, hair fall, dandruff, itchy scalp and whatnot. The one definite solution is whipping up a quick hair mask at home and treating your mane with it before you shampoo. To make your lives easy, we have put together an easy guide of five DIY hair masks that need just three to four ingredients and tools available in your pantry. Best of all, the masks are perfect for oily, damaged, dull and coloured hair. Take notes!

For thin, limp hair

For damaged tresses

There’s nothing attractive about thin and dull hair. Humidity strips off the sheen and moisture from your strands, and it’s only fair to pay attention to it right away before it worsens any further. A powerhouse of fibre, vitamin B and E and antioxidants, Avocado singlehandedly brings back the lost lustre and liveliness to your hair. But once you mix it with other superior ingredients like olive oil that works its antibacterial magic and curd that hydrates and infuses protein to your hair, monsoon will no more be your enemy.

Step 1: Peel off one ripe avocado and mash it into a paste.

Step 2: Thoroughly mix the paste with a tablespoon of olive oil and four to five tablespoons of curd.

Step 3: Apply and spread this mixture on your hair from roots to tips.

Step 4: Wait for 20-30 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.

For hair fall

Noticing chunks of hair on your comb, pillowcase and the shower drain? While losing 50-100 strands of hair a day is normal, anything more than that is a cause for concern. Hair fall, especially in the monsoon, can be scary, we agree. The cause is usually your dry scalp, which weakens the roots of your hair and causes breakage. But if you feed your hair and, of course, the scalp the right proteins and vitamins in the form of a mask, you can turn things in your favour. All you need are fenugreek seeds soaked in water overnight. If you love some fragrance in your mask, then throw in a few drops of lavender or rosemary essential oil.

Step 1: In a bowl, soak half a cup of fenugreek (methi) seeds and let it sit for at least 10 hours overnight.

Step 2: Get rid of the water and grind the moist seeds into a paste.

Step 3: Mix in two to three drops of your favourite essential oil such as lavender, rosemary or tea tree.

Step 4: Apply this hair mask on your hair and dab some on your scalp as well.

Step 5: Leave it on for 25-30 minutes and wash off with cold or lukewarm water.

For frizzy and tangled hair

You’re not alone if frizz and tangles in your hair have overwhelmed you in this humid, rainy weather. But it turns out you don’t need to run to the salon and spend a bomb on hair treatments to get it fixed. All you need is the super-nourishing TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Deep Smoothing Mask that infuses gloss and softness into your hair in no time. Packed with pH-balanced Marula oil that has impressive antioxidants, vitamin C and E, anti-inflammatory and hydrating goodness, this hair mask keeps humidity at bay and gives you smooth, frizz and tangle-free tresses.

Step 1: Begin by washing your hair with a mild shampoo.

Step 2: Squeeze out the excess water from hair.

Step 3: Scoop out the hair mask and apply it on your tresses, from mid-length to ends. Focus on the ends more as they tend to be drier.

Step 4: Leave the mask on for three to five minutes.

Step 5: That’s it – now rinse it off with cold water and revel in salon-like smooth, detangled hair at home!

For dandruff

Flaky, itchy scalp and flakes on shoulders? Your dry head is indicating an urgent need for hydration. And, while we are on the topic of getting rid of dandruff, aloe vera, the succulent plant found at every home, must be considered because of its highly hydrating and moisturising power. When the enzymes, antioxidants and vitamins present in it combine with honey and apple cider vinegar or coconut oil, it creates a healing shield for your tresses that makes monsoon a worry-free (read, dandruff-free) weather.
Step 1: Take three to four tablespoons of aloe vera gel, two tsp of honey and two tsp of apple cider vinegar (or coconut oil) in a bowl.

Step 2: Mix it well so that you don’t see soft lumps of aloe vera gel anymore.

Step 3: Dip your fingers or a hair mask brush into the paste and apply it to your hair generously.

Step 4: Let the mask work its magic for about 30 minutes.

Step 5: Jump into the shower and gently rinse it off wi
