Whether you’re going for Sofia Richie like sleek wedding updo or Bollywood approved hair buns as seen on Athiya Shetty, Masaba Gupta and Priyanka Chopra Jonas among many others – hair buns are the chicest. They’re great for outdoor weddings, will keep hair off your back and allow your outfit to steal all the attention. The bun hairstyle has become a signature for Alia Bhatt over the years. Her Diwali look featured a heritage craft saree which she styled with a twisted braid bun updo surrounded by yellow daisies. Gaining popularity, the sleek bun has come to be a favourite among GenZ Bollywood starlets too like Ananya Panday, Shanaya Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor.

We asked Anisha Nagpal, a renowned hair artist in Mumbai who has worked on many bridal hairstyles over the years, to share the easiest buns to pull off. “Usually low or mid-height buns hold well as they work with the natural fall of the hair and don’t require extreme styling.” Think a low twisted bun that is quick and easy, especially when you twist sections of your hair before pinning them at the nape. “The sleek bun is surprisingly easy to achieve too because it involves minimal styling steps, can work with most hair types, demands minimal tools, is easy to secure and extremely quick to customise.”

As much as we love traditions, the modern bride likes to add a contemporary touch to everything. When it comes to wedding hairdos, get your creative juices flowing from boho-inspired loose buns with delicate floral accents to sculptural top knots and asymmetrical styles that defy expectations. Nonetheless, these are all variations of a traditional hair bun.

We’re listing down top three bun hairstyles for weddings that’ll allow every bride to amalgamate her tradition and personality to the classic bun hairstyle

Center-Part Low Sleek Bun

Sleek buns are this season’s coolest. This major trend in 2024 is known for its clean, polished finish that works for both casual and formal occasions. It’s super polished, usually with a bit of shine serum or gel to keep hair smooth and glossy. Tresemme Keratin Smooth Serum is great for taming your tresses, allowing you to achieve that elegant, minimalist look. Whether you have long or medium hair length, this one is a classic style.

Style It Right: Anisha’s first styling tip is the obvious and most important one - secure your bun with bobby pins. “You can create an ‘X’ shape with hair pins to hold your hair in place; couple this with bobby pins and U-pins strategically”, shares the stylist.

Braided Messy Bun

Channel your carefree spirit in this Bohemian chic style hairdo. Add flowers to it as a charming addition making it perfect for weddings, festivals, or any romantic event. For bridesmaids sans a dedicated hairstylist at the wedding or for festivities, Anisha shares how you can create this hairstyle without a professional. “First create a loose, textured bun by gathering the hair into a low ponytail and loosely twisting it up into a bun. Allow a few strands to fall out for a carefree vibe. Add small pins or flowers for a bit of wedding-day flair to complete your look.”

Style It Right: Nagpal shares, “prep with texture, use strong-hold hairspray and tease (back comb) the roots for volume and grip.” We want the illusion of a messy bun for that effortless look. Having said that, avoid overloading with heavy products too and allow time for the hair to set.

Messy Textured Top Knot

Let the effortlessness of the messy top knot be big in 2024, with extra volume and texture. “It’s incredibly easy to style. Start by gathering your hair high on the crown, then loosely twisting it into a bun, and then letting a few strands fall naturally”, adds Nagpal. This one is a winning choice for a Mehendi function or a boho themed lunch. “Use a bit of texturizing spray to enhance volume.” For brides with fine hair, this one is a great option since it can be enhanced with a few additional pieces of hair extensions.

Style It Right: Before starting to style, never skip a heat protectant. Heat damage can deteriorate the strands severely. Use Tresemme Keratin Smooth Heat Protect Spray for best results. This one will also take your flyaways and leave your hair shiny and glossy. It always helps to deep condition your hair post heavy styling. You can go for a good old oil champi and leave it on for a couple of hours or leave it overnight. I also like to get regular hair spas done so that the hair health is maintained. Both allow your hair to nourish on a deeper level, locking in moisture and shine.

Accessorising Your Bun

Let your hairdo stand out by accessorising it. The most common yet stunning way is to add fresh flowers to your hair. Choosing from daisies to roses and jasmine, flowers as accessories is a time-honoured hair styling trick. Another way is to opt for hair jewellery. You can even add a pop of colour with some hair clips. Each of these ideas adds a distinct look to buns, making them versatile and stylish for any occasion. A large part of accessorising well is to style your hair properly. Don’t let frizzy hair get in the way. Use a hair cream to add texture and volume while creating your desired look. TIGI Bed Head Small Talk Hair For Fine & Flat Hair Thickening Cream is the ideal anti-static formula that prevents flyaways and improves manageability. Wedding hairstyling can be tiring on the hair. Say goodbye to second day hair problems with the Tigi Bed Head Dirty Secret Instant Refresh & Go For Day 2 Hair Dry Shampoo Spray. This one’s a saviour!

Festivities and weddings are the perfect time to experiment with different hair styles and adapt to unique and bold choices when it comes to beauty. Whether you’re a bridesmaid or a guest attending a wedding function, try these unconventional bun styles to step outside the traditional bridal box. Bridesmaids can try simple and elegant styles like low twisted bun, braided bun and half-up bun by using these products and styling tips. Embrace your creativity this wedding season.
