Follow these expert tips to have a dandruff-free winter

With the cool breeze and hot chocolate weather, winter is undoubtedly our favourite season! However, our hair doesn’t seem to share the same sentiment with us! For winters bring with it the embarrassing white flakes of dandruff that just doesn’t seem to go away. But, we’re here to make sure we change it this time around.

We got in touch with Pooja Singh, National Creative Director - Hair at Lakmé Salon to share her expert tips on how we can enjoy a dandruff-free winter. Read on as she spills the beans on how to prevent the occurrence of dandruff in winter like a pro.

BB: Any home remedies that can help keep dandruff at bay this winter?

BB: Why do we experience more dandruff during the winters?

Pooja: Dandruff is a common scalp condition in which small pieces of dry skin flake off the scalp. Sometimes, the cells go into overproduction and shed at twice the normal rate, which presents a problem for the scalp. When the scalp produces excess oil, the oil makes the dead cells stick together and form white clumps that we see as dandruff.

During winters, there is a lack of moisture content in the air, which makes it dry, eventually leading to dryness of the skin and the scalp. When the scalp becomes dry, a flaky substance starts forming on your head, which is nothing but dry dandruff.

Pooja: Here is what you should do:

Brush hair from the roots: Stimulating the scalp increases blood circulation, thus increasing the secretion of oils that keep hair and scalp healthy.

Consume a healthy diet: Include fruits, raw salads, eggs, fish, bananas and spinach in your diet, as these are powerful sources of nutrients that your hair needs.

Take multivitamins: An extra dose of iron, zinc, Vitamin B and omega 3 will only help your hair, so you can take oral supplements for the same.

Pooja: It’s important to oil your hair before every head bath in winter to avoid dandruff. Coconut oil is the best form of hydration for the scalp and the hair. You can also mix coconut oil, almond oil and castor oil in equal measure. Make sure you heat the oil slightly and apply it from scalp to tips. Wash it off with a mild shampoo. You can also add a few drops of essential oil like tea tree oil and rosemary oil to your tresses, which are known to combat dandruff.

Pro tip: Do not apply oil on scalp & hair and go out as this would attract dust and aggravate the infection.

BB: What hair care routine should be followed to prevent dandruff build-up?

Pooja: Here’s a step-by-step hair care routine that I'd suggest to prevent dandruff build-up -

Step 1: Apply warm oil on the scalp, section by section, two hours prior to having a head bath or apply overnight. While massaging, stimulate the scalp with mild pressure with finger movement.

Step 2: After oiling, rinse your hair with a mild, sulphate-free shampoo with active ingredients like tea tree oil, coconut oil or panax-ginseng root extract. Shampoos like TIGI Copyright Scalp Shampoo or De Fabulous Ginger energising Shampoo works well in this case. First, wet the hair properly with warm water and massage the scalp only with plain water. Then, take about 5ml of shampoo on the palm and apply all over the scalp and emulsify. This will create lather and cleanse the scalp. Avoid using extra shampoo.

Step 3: Squeeze out all the extra water from the scalp or towel dry your hair

Step 4: Apply conditioner on the lengths and ends of the hair, and comb the hair with a wide-toothed comb. Leave the conditioner on your hair for about 5-7 minutes.

Step 5: Finally, rinse your hair with room temperature water. Dry it with a towel and don’t forget to apply a serum.

BB: Can you recommend some anti-dandruff treatments one can opt for?

Pooja: Depending on an expert's consultation for your specific hair type and health, Essential Dry & Sensitive Scalp Treatment or Essential Dandruff Treatment provided at Lakmé Salon work wonders. This service is done with products that have active ingredients like Vitamin B3 & B7 (biotin) that strengthens the hair and scalp; Panax Ginseng root extract that enhances blood circulation; and Panthenol that helps balance the moisture content of scalp and hair. Other important ingredients are allantoin that is anti-inflammatory and has a soothing effect, lemongrass, which helps balance scalp oil, is antibacterial and helps with the itching, and menthol for a cooling and soothing effect - basically everything your hair needs to fight dandruff.

Pooja: For at-home treatments, I trust the following remedies -
Warm oil therapy: Massaging warm oil before a head bath can help your scalp and hair a great deal in the cold weather.

ACV: Mix equal proportions of apple cider vinegar and warm water. Then, spray the mix on your scalp. Leave it for 15-20 mins, before rinsing off.

Honey and lemon magic: Honey is a natural humectant and lemon keeps the scalp clean, mixing them together can work wonders against dandruff. Take three tablespoons of honey and add a few drops of lemon to it. Apply this mix to your scalp and let it sit for 15 minutes. Wash it off with a mild shampoo.

Honey and yoghurt work wonders: Mix three tablespoons of yoghurt in two tablespoons of honey and apply it to your scalp and hair. Let it sit for 20 minutes and rinse it off with shampoo. This mixture not only keeps the scalp clean but also softens the hair.
