Good Skincare Starts in the Shower—Here's Why

When you think about skincare, you probably picture the elaborate array of creams, moisturisers, and serums on your bathroom shelves. But what if we told you that an effective skincare routine starts in the shower?

That’s right—your shower habits can set the foundation for healthy, glowing skin. Let’s dive into why a good shower routine is crucial and how the right products can make all the difference.

The Importance of a Good Shower Routine

Showers do more than just clean your body. For most of us, they’re a chance to relax and unwind. But don’t forget, your shower routine is also one of the few dedicated times for body care in your day.

We see a shower as an opportunity to properly care for the skin on your body, which often gets less attention than the skin on your face. A good shower routine includes the right products packed with ingredients your skin needs – whether it's craving hydration, brightness or even just a good scrub.

So, how do you craft a good shower routine? Let's break it down.

Always Start with Your Hair Care

Washing your skin before your hair can be counterproductive. Residue from your shampoo or other hair products can linger on your skin and cause irritation. By washing your hair first, you ensure you can rinse off any leftover shampoo or hair mask residue from your skin afterward.

Choose the Right Cleanser

Choosing the right cleanser is the first step in establishing an effective shower routine. Harsh soaps can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, irritated and dull. Instead, look for something that hydrates while it cleanses.

Our current favourite is the Dove Advanced Sensitive Care Bar with Ceramide Nutrient Cream – an excellent choice for daily use. It's great for all skin types but especially beneficial for those with dry or sensitive skin. Its star ingredient, a ceramide-nutrient cream, helps maintain your skin’s natural moisture barrier, preventing dryness and irritation.

Prefer a body wash instead? Try the Dove Advanced Sensitive Care Body Wash. It has a hypoallergenic formula with ceramides, designed to be gentle while effectively cleansing the skin. Both the soap and body wash are free from parabens, dyes, and phthalates, making them ideal for sensitive skin that needs extra care and hydration.

Don’t Forget to Exfoliate

Exfoliation is a crucial step in any skincare routine, yet it's often overlooked. The easiest way to incorporate body exfoliation? Do it in the shower.

Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and improve blood circulation. Just make sure to choose an exfoliant that’s right for your skin type.

If you prefer a physical exfoliant, go for a gentle body scrub. Alternatively, you can choose shower products with exfoliating acids, like glycolic acid. Just don’t overdo it – over-exfoliating can damage your skin. It’s important to find a balance that works for you. Depending on your skin type, exfoliating once or twice a week is usually enough.

The Right Temperature is Key

Does shower temperature affect  skin? It sure does. Using lukewarm water instead of hot water can prevent your skin from drying out. Additionally, incorporating products with hydrating ingredients can help lock in moisture.

Post-Shower Skincare

What you do after your shower is just as important as the shower itself. Patting your skin dry with a soft towel (rather than rubbing) helps prevent irritation. Applying a good moisturiser while your skin is still a bit damp can help lock in the hydration.

For those with sensitive skin, a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturiser is ideal. Look for products that contain ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which help to maintain the skin’s natural barrier and retain moisture.

So, the next time you step into the shower, remember that this is where your skincare journey begins. Enjoy the pamper session and watch as your skin thanks you for it!
