Makeup artist Bushra Khan shows you how to protect your skin against pollution

With pollution levels rising to alarming levels, it becomes important to make sure your skin does not pay the price for it. Dust, dirt and vehicular emissions all make it difficult for your skin to stay clear and healthy. Even if you plan on staying indoors for the rest of your life, there is no guarantee your skin can escape the effects of pollution. This is why you need a good skincare regimen to protect your skin from pollution.

No matter how many scarves you wrap around your neck, dust and particulate matter from pollution will clog your pores. This is why it is important you choose a cleanser that is gentle but will do a thorough job of cleansing your skin. Look for cleansers with activated carbon as they absorb and lift away any debris that has settled on your skin.

Indoors, outdoors, cloudy, rainy, summery, wherever you are and whatever the season, you cannot escape UV rays. UVA and UVB rays are just about everywhere. Use a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 no matter where you are. Pick makeup products like compacts that have some amount of SPF, as this will give you extra protection.

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen on your neck! This area is as exposed to the elements as other parts of your body and needs just as much protection.

Pollution makes your skin react by producing free-radicals in the top surface. These free-radicals break the collagen in your skin down and make it lose its elasticity and suppleness. The result is fine lines, wrinkles and signs of premature ageing. When the outer layer of the skin is damaged, your skin begins to look dry, feel irritated and becomes sensitive. So pick products that have ingredients that promote collagen production and cell renewal.
