It’s an early start on set. Backdrops are being constructed, lights are being tested, and outfits are carefully steam-ironed. One is as alert and measured as a Sunday 6 am call time allows you to be. And then the energy shifts, almost as if on cue, with a text that flashes on our phones.

“Zeenat’s arrived.”

Over 1400 kilometres away, my parents demand a minute-by-minute account of the day. Understandably so. Zeenat Aman had their generation in a chokehold with her unforgettable roles: the rebellious hippie in Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), the ethereal Rupa in Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), the electrifying disco singer in Qurbani (1980), and the femme fatale in Don (1978). With her unconventional allure, audacious choices, and effortless charm, she shattered stereotypes of the traditional Indian heroine. Zeenat redefined the archetype, blending modernity, individuality, and charisma to craft a legacy that remains unparalleled.

I put my phone on aeroplane mode (apologies to the protesting parents), pull up a chair beside Be Beautiful’s December cover star, and dive right into a conversation that I know will be just as iconic as the woman herself.

Breaking The Mould

With her breakthrough role in Hare Rama Hare Krishna, she disrupted conservative beauty norms. “It was never a calculated process,” she reflects. “I was just being who I was. When I was cast, it was a departure from the normal mould of Indian leading ladies. I suppose I was in the right place at the right time.”

Her Westernized avatars, bold fashion, and magnetic presence made her a favourite among producers and audiences. She became the face of a new era—an unapologetic blend of tradition and modernity. For Zeenat, it wasn’t rebellion; it was simply an authentic expression of who she was.

Her Journey with Beauty

When conceptualizing the debut digital edition of Be Beautiful, one criterion stood out: our cover star had to represent authenticity. Zeenat Aman, with over 80 films and a cultural footprint that stretches into the present day via her Instagram-breaking captions, was the unanimous choice.

“Beauty came late to me,” Zeenat admits with a laugh. She recalls her convent education, a time when makeup wasn’t even a consideration. “It wasn’t until I started modelling that I learned how to enhance my features. During film shoots, we used thick foundation sticks—layers of makeup for the camera. It was a different era altogether.”

While the tools of beauty have evolved, her philosophy remains rooted in authenticity. “There is no absolute standard of beauty,” she insists. “It’s personal, deeply individual. You have to accept yourself—that’s where beauty lies.”

For Zeenat, beauty goes far beyond aesthetics. “To be beautiful is to be yourself. Confidence, to me, is the ultimate beauty enhancer,” she says.

On Work Ethics and Living Authentically

With a career spanning more than 50 years, Zeenat Aman’s work ethic continues to inspire. “It’s about being present and delivering what’s expected of you,” she says. Despite her iconic status, she remains refreshingly grounded. “I’m detached from the whole Zeenat Aman persona,” she admits. “I don’t take myself too seriously. Off-camera, I enjoy the simple pleasures of life.”

She’s aware about the transient nature of the business and there’s a remarkable detachment, composure, and harmony in her approach to it all. “For me, it’s about gratitude—truly feeling it and delivering it in every aspect of life.” This sense of equilibrium is striking. Despite the pressures of her industry, Zeenat’s outlook reveals a mandate to stay authentic in a world that often demands conformity.

Inspiring Generations

Zeenat Aman’s influence extends far beyond her filmography. Her individuality and iconic style continue to inspire. From costume parties to cultural homages, her influence is everywhere. Yet, she brushes off her impact with characteristic modesty: “I live in the moment.”

When asked what advice she has for anyone facing pressures to conform to rigid beauty norms, her message is clear: “Accept who you are and revel in it. Confidence comes from self-love. That’s where true beauty lies.”

A New Era for Be Beautiful

As Be Beautiful’s first digital cover star, Zeenat Aman embodies everything the platform celebrates: individuality, authenticity, and the evolving narrative of beauty. She reminds us that beauty isn’t about fitting into moulds but about breaking free from them.

As the world embraces new digital horizons, Zeenat Aman stands as a steadfast reminder that true beauty never fades—it evolves.
