What is a Concealer?

Can you imagine a pizza without cheese? Concealer use is to makeup what cheese is to pizza. It’s a product that has a permanent place in our vanity kit. If I have 30 seconds to a minute to get ready, this would be the one product I’d pick first. A concealer is the most versatile product of the beauty sphere. If I may, it’s the ‘Shalini Passi’ of the makeup universe. What can’t it do? From cloaking visible tiredness on the face to delivering a flawless base, your concealer is multi-talented, just like Passi. I’ve rounded up 10 concealer use hacks that you can try before your next festive soirée.

Uses Of Concealer in Makeup

Colour Correction

You’ve been binge-watching Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives and Nobody Wants This and now you have Panda eyes? A concealer will be your bestie the next morning. While concealers work fine for slight discoloration, if there is severe pigmentation you must colour correct to conceal. First, choose the colour correcting concealer that would suit your skin tone and concern. For colour correction, use the opposite colour on the colour wheel, such as green for pink or red spots. The basic theory is that complementary colours on the wheel neutralise each other. Once you pat the corrector on the problem areas, follow it up with a concealer to set it. Lock it in with loose powder and use a setting spray at the end of the makeup.

Blemishes & Dark Spots

This one’s easy. Just apply a tiny amount of concealer on your dark spots and blemishes and blend it out with a brush. To make it flawless, I like to use a beauty blender after this step to further blend to perfection. For this, you’ll choose a concealer that matches your skin tone or is lighter. You can even consider using peach or orange colour correctors to neutralise dark spots. Lakme 9 To 5 Primer + Matte Liquid Concealer is especially made to hide dark spots. It has a built-in primer that reduces the appearance of pores and dark spots for a seamless look.

Base For Lips

We all want our lip colour to last the entire night. Well, the first step is to conceal the lips before applying your lip liner and after applying your lip balm. By dabbing on some concealer on your lips, it makes for an even base for the lip colour. I just let my concealer spread from around to the lips. Now when you apply lipstick, the colour will spread evenly.

Base For EyeLids

Just like adding a touch of concealer on the lips lets the colour spread smoothly, same goes for the eyelids. Before you dive into a smokey eye creation of your own, apply a dot of concealer on the eyelids. Now take your favourite eye shadow and go forth with your artistry.

Pro tip: Complete your eye shadow application before applying foundation. You’re likely to sprinkle the remaining powder on your cheek. Use a makeup remover to gently wipe off any shadow settled on your cheekbones. Now go on with your foundation and concealer application.

Contour

Sculpt your face to perfection by using your contour powder or stick in combination with a concealer. For instance, you can apply concealer to the sides of your face and under your jawline to create a sculpted look on a round face. Contrary to concealing dark spots, to contour you will need a concealer that is 2-3 shades darker than the natural colour of your skin. Blend it out really well to ensure you don’t leave any sharp lines.

Fixing Liner Imperfections

I’m not someone who can just ‘wing it’ in one go. Often I end up using a Q-tip to reshape my liner. I then use a tiny amount of concealer to brighten the outer corners of my eye, stretching it up to the temples.

Defining Eyebrows

To give the illusion of lifted eyebrows by defining them with a concealer. All you need to do it, apply a thin line of concealer just below your eyebrow. Use a flat brush to spread it out and outline your brows. Now go on with filling your brows if need be. I simply brush mine but, you do you. Lakme Unreal Cover Creme Concealer is a lightweight & hydrating formula that lets your makeup stay intact for hours.

Pro Tip: Use a little bit of highlighter right under the top end of your eyebrow. This will lift your brows further.

Defining Lips

To clearly define your cupid’s bow, outline the upper part of the lips just as you did with the eyebrows. Post this, you can go ahead with a lip liner. You can also make your lips look fuller with the help of the concealer. Apply a small amount of concealer to the outer edges of your lips and blend it inwards. Remember to pick up a concealer that is two shades lighter than your skin tone when you’re looking to define or lift your features.

Dark Circles

Using a concealer is the key to concealing dark circles. When you apply under eye makeup, it allows to build coverage that diminishes the appearance of dark circles. To have smooth looking, brighter and more energised under eyes, use Lakme Vitamin C Superglow Concealer. It is infused with 1 % Vit C that corrects, concealers and brightens the skin. I also like Lakme Absolute Instant Airbrush Concealer Pen that’s incredibly convenient when you’re on-the-go. It’ll allow you to touch up your makeup and conceal those dark circles from time to time.

Strobe Like a Pro

You can create your own strobe cream or colour correcting cream (CC cream). Just mix your moisturiser with a little bit of concealer. Now apply it as you would your foundation. It’s a good idea to do this when you’re in a hurry or when you don’t require makeup but still want to hide dark circles and marks.

For a luminous look that would last long, remember to set your concealer with a setting power. Finish it with a setting spray to ensure your makeup stays intact. Ace your concealer game like the pro that you are and explore a wide range of Lakme products to create your flawless canvas.
