What is a HydraFacial?

FAQs about hydrafacial

HydraFacial is a patented, non-invasive skin procedure that is also sometimes referred to as “hydradermabrasion” because it involves microdermabrasion-like methods of exfoliation paired with hydrating serums. There are numerous types of HydraFacials available at spas and dermatology clinics. The two popular ones include doing the treatment with a Jet Peel infuser and a 5-step facial using peels and hyaluronic acid.

There is a jet of water in a hydra jet facial that flushes out the grime from the surface of the skin, and it also deep cleanses the pores. At the same time, the suction helps clean blackheads and congested pores. In some HydraFacials, there is an additional step of infusion of a skin solution containing hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, etc., to help nourish the skin while it is being cleansed and exfoliated.

HydraFacials have gained a lot of popularity, especially among Indians, as our skin tends to be more sensitive to abrasion than other skin types. This is a safer, milder procedure with far better results than most treatments available right now. Other procedures come with a downtime of at least a few hours or days, that’s not the case with HydraFacials, and this is why it is one of the most preferred skin treatments.

There is no abrasion, needling or pinching involved in this procedure, this is why the patient won’t feel any pain or discomfort on their skin. In fact, it can be enjoyable and relaxing like regular facials. There might be a slight tingling sensation because of the serums used in this treatment such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid. How is hydrafacial different from microdermabrasion and chemical peels?

FAQs about hydrafacial

Microdermabrasion

This is for surface exfoliation of the skin and it is slightly more aggressive than a hydra-facial. There is a vacuum with crystals of aluminium oxide that act as an abrasive exfoliating agent. The skin is pulled up and stretched due to suction, and the microcrystals abrade the skin's surface. This is suitable for thick, oily skin. With normal to thin skin, it can be too aggressive, leading to minor skin abrasions and sensitivity in the long run. Hydrafacial is suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin, there is no pulling or stretching involved, therefore no redness or inflammation post-procedure.

Chemical peels

The peels use an acidic solution that breaks the skin surface protein (keratin) and softens the skin cells. When the peel is neutralised or washed off, the top dead skin layers are wiped off gently, leaving the skin smoother, softer and de-tanned. Depending on the skin needs, various acids and strengths of acids are chosen. However, peels take a few days to reveal healthy and glowing skin, after the surface layer has peeled off completely. During this time, one cannot apply makeup or other skincare ingredients. Downtime lasts for 3 days, which is not the case with hydrafacials. There is no downtime and you can apply makeup and other products right after the treatment.
