What is the right age to start waxing, threading and plucking?

As beauty experts we get asked a lot of questions regarding hair, skin and makeup and we always try to resolve them to the best of our ability. However, recently one of our readers who is mother to a teenage girl wanted to know what is a reasonable age for her daughter to wax and shape her brows. While we could have simply said it all depends on her comfort level, we decided to address this issue in detail as many mothers and teenagers have asked us the same question a bunch of times.

Does it have anything to do with self-consciousness?

Look at it as a bonding act

Teenagers tend to do things that ‘everyone else of their age is doing’ but that’s not a good enough excuse. It is also a time when girls become conscious about their looks, they start comparing their bodies to their classmates, friends and feel uncomfortable because of the difference they notice. This difference may not be major but in her head she feels like the odd one out. Sit down with your daughter and get to know the reason behind her sudden demand to get rid of hair on her body or shape her brows. If she says something like her hair growth is too dense or she wants to do it for hygienic reasons we think 13-16 years is a good enough age for a teenager to get her first waxing or threading experience.

Once you’ve made the decision, it is now time to consider the options. Getting rid of hair on the body isn’t limited to waxing, she can also consider shaving, depilatory creams and epilators which are a little less painful methods. If your daughter’s skin is sensitive, waxing can hurt and even give burns. Do not try waxing at home as hair growth differs from one person to the other and only an expert can do it well.

The best part about having a daughter is that you both can spend some mother-daughter time at the salon getting pampered. Taking some time off from your busy schedule and spending time with your little girl can be a lot of fun––so go ahead and plan a salon day with your younger version, after all it’s one of the few things that will finally get her off that phone!
