Waxing, threading or laser—what’s better for upper lip hair removal?
Ladies, let’s face it—hair removal on your upper lip can be daunting. Not only is it a mandatory monthly task to get out of the way, it’s also completely unavoidable. So wouldn’t it be better if someone just told you the best possible hair removal method for your hairy upper lip? We spoke to renowned dermatologist, Dr. Aparna Santhanam to find out the benefits and downsides of each hair removal method on your skin and which one to choose for your next salon appointment.

“While the skin is stretched when waxing, it isn’t harsh enough to cause any injury,” says Aparna. However, it can have temporary effects on the upper lip like burning or redness because waxing goes considerably deeper into the skin than threading. However, if you have sensitive or oily, acne-prone skin or issues like rosacea, waxing may not be the best choice for your upper lip. “The tugging, heat and wax can cause sensitive or rosacea affected skin to get inflamed and irritated. There’s a chance that oily, acne-prone skin can get folliculitis when waxing isn’t done well,” continues Aparna.

While waxing is efficient for large sections of skin like the hands and legs, threading is better for small areas like the upper lip. “The reason why threading is ideal for all skin types is because the pressure of it can be adjusted accordingly,”Aparna tells us. But, threading is more superficial than waxing, which means hair will grow back quicker. However if not done gently enough, it can cause boils and bruising so make sure you tell your skin technician to go easy before the process.

Laser hair removal is safe for all skin types and shows considerable reduction in the hair growth.” says Aparna. However, not many are aware of laser hair removal. Plus, it does have certain downsides too. “It requires multiple sessions and is definitely more expensive than most other methods,” states Aparna.

Aparna’s skin expert recommendations

“To remove hair on the upper lip, I recommend threading because the pressure can be adjusted in this method,” Aparna tells us. Further, she advises us on post-removal treatment—“If faced with skin redness or irritation after hair removal, apply ice over the area and if it persists, consult a dermatologist.”
